The DNK team has been working hard thinking up ways to improve the experience for you folks, the users. One of the areas we’ve been working on is the available article categories. For reference, here’s the current list of categories:
- ADO.NET
- Compact Framework
- Mono
- Security
- WCF
- AJAX
- Database
- MVC
- Silverlight
- Web Services
- ALT.NET
- DirectoryServices
- Node.js
- SQL
- Windows 8
- Architecture
- Events
- NOSQL
- Team System
- Windows Forms
- ASP.NET
- F#
- Open Source
- Tips & Tricks
- Windows Presentation Foundation
- Azure
- IE
- Other
- Unit Testing
- Windows Workflow Foundation
- C#
- jQuery
- Patterns
- VB.NET
- XAML
- C++
- Linq
- Products
- Vista
- XML
- CLR
- Live Framework
- Regular Expressions
- Visual Studio
- XNA
- Community
- Live Mesh
That’s quite an exhaustive list, but we feel it could be better. We want you to tell us what categories you want gone, and what new categories you’d like added. Here’s what we’re thinking about adding:
- Algorithms
- WinRT
- Metro
- Kinect
Here’s what we’re thinking about removing:
- ALT.NET – Once a strong open-source movement in the .Net community, the official site/newsgroup/twitter for Alt.net has disappeared. The .Net universe now has a thriving open source community, and Microsoft is supporting that community. Alt.net really no longer applies, the alternative has become mainstream.
- Vista – No longer the latest version of Windows, we’re thinking that we should put this one out to pasture.
- IE – We can’t seem to think of any good reasons to keep this category around. While not all our categories specifically relate to .Net, we feel that there isn’t even really a casual relationship between .Net and IE. The world of web design and programming is different today and cross-browser support is the name of the game. There’s no room left in this world for IE specific programming.
- DirectoryServices – Again, in our efforts to refocus the community, we feel that DirectoryServices really doesn’t have a place on DNK.
Disagree with anything we’re proposing? Let us know!
Want to see other new categories? Let us know!
Want to get rid of other categories? You know what to do!

I didn’t think about it, but we don’t have a generic Javascript category either, just a jQuery category. Anyone else think a generic Javascript category would be useful?

Thanks for this. I agree with all the ideas proposed here. Definitely add those 4 new categories.

IE category is useful especially for web programmers. Maybe IE can be made IE (browsers) or Browsers (IE). The post I saw about PDF.js has more to do with Mozilla than HTML5.
We dont have a category for HTML or HTML5 or CSS.
Do we need a category for Windows Phone and mobile apps?
Do we need to keep regular expressions as a category?
I could see having a browsers category, but having browser-specific categories seems to go against the current trend of cross-browser compatibility and standards.
I could definitely see having a Windows Phone category, and regular expressions could probably go. My eyes must have skipped over that one.
I’m not sure about HTML/CSS, what does everyone else think? Maybe we need to get a poll going for some of these as well? The community as a whole will be able to make a better decision than any one of us individually.

I just want C/C++ examples, sexy tricks, tight code, little-known but useful library calls/objects, etc. I may want more later, but that’s my focus right now. I interrupted my C++ refresher to start a C refresher to get some certs rolling since the world seems to have forgotten me. How can we help each other?
